CRACK Volume 1 a.k.a. Book'Em Dan-O
Crack - The Passion of Dan Burke
Dan Burke's Last Stand
a film by paul perrier
The intro: Book'em Dan-O
In early September of 2001, I received a phone call
from my old friend Dan Burke, who was the booking agent at the legendary
"El Moccambo" bar in Toronto..."I have the greatest
fucking movie I want you to make! It's a rock'n roll "Roger
and Me". I was hooked!
I followed Dan on September 8, 9 and 10 as he attempted
to make contact with Mick Jagger, who was in town promoting his
film during the Toronto International Film Festival, to invite the
Rolling Stones to perform a 25th Anniversary show of the historic
"Love You Live" album from 1977...Then 9/11 happened.
Not only the Twin Towers toppled that day? I did not see or hear
from Dan for a long time. He was hooked...
The conflict: Crack - The Passion of Dan
Burke
On September 11th 2002, as the world was still trying
to come to terms with the disaster of the previous year, I met with
Dan at the apartment of a punk rock band called "The Cheerleaders",
to screen a 10 minute film that I had edited called "Book'em
Dan-O". He seemed more interested in his crack pipe
than my film. Dan Burke wants to save Rock'n roll...But can he save
himself? For the past four years I have captured Dan in his
chaotic world, as he dances on the razor's edge of life and death.
This segment captures Dan's metamorphosis from booking agent, to
a performer/singer/songwriter/rapper/actor and stand up comic. Dan
is telling his life story with each creative outlet he attempts.
In September of 2004 I showed Dan a twenty minute version of the
film called "CRACK-VOLUME 1 - The Passion of Dan Burke".
After watching the piece he said that he really liked the filmmaking
that I had done, but that there was no real coheasive story to tell.
Time passed...
I caught up with Dan in late April 2005 at the Silver
Dollar. We had a beer and I mentioned to him that I thought he was
missing a real opportunity with what we had been shooting over the
last four years and that we should not lose out on an opportunity
like this. He walked away and returned 5 minutes later with the
ending for the film…
The resolution: : Dan Burke's Last Stand
During (but not part of) the North by North East
Music Festival (NXNE) this year in Toronto, Dan Burke is booking
The "NEXT" (originally titled "NOT-NXNE")
shows at his principal venue The Silver Dollar Room, a showcase
of cutting edge musicians that always steals the lime light away
from the other bookers in the game. This is the completion of the
trilogy for Dan and will also be an opportunity to introduce the
film itself.
The conclusion: THE END ?
The conflict is over and everything is explained...or
is it?
"Fear my motherfuckiing shoes dude!"
- Dan Burke *from "Show Promoter Dan Rebuttal Rap".
