Day 18
Friday June 21, 2005.
-Bare Naked in Rosedale-
“What are you doing tonight?”.
It was Drew Harris. (www.drewharris.com)
“I just got back from Buttfuckonville Arkansas at 3:00
am this morning”. Me.
“One of my paintings is being auctioned at a fund raiser
for “Serve Canada” in someone’s back yard in Rosedale”.
Drew
“Drew- I’ve been away for four days”.
Me.
“Bare Naked Ladies, Ron Sexsmith, Jim Cuddy, and Alan
Doyle are performing”. Drew.
“There’s no way!”. ME.
“Did I mention it’s an open bar”. Drew.
“O.K.”. Me.

Drew Harris is another “work in progress”,
in my growing body of incredible stories that have happened to friends
of mine.
I have known Drew for the past 10 years. Two of his
paintings hang in our house. One was painted for Nicol and me, in
exchange for some help we had given him on something. The other
one he painted specifically to commemorate the day
our first daughter Dylan born.
Last year Drew moved to the historic St.Clair apartment
where Glenn Gould lived and produced some of his best work until
his death.
He told me that he was planning his next “Exhibit”
based on paintings produced in the space while listening to Gould’s
music and interpreting it on canvas.
The original name for the show was to be “TWENTY
FINGERS”. I asked him again to let me document what it is
like for a painter to go from concept (Blank Canvas) to completion
(The Show). I wanted to call the film “THIRTY FINGERS”.
He agreed.
It started six months ago. Like most of my other
works, it has been a wild roller coaster ride. Think Nick Nolte
in “New York Stories”.
I went to the party this evening because I knew that
it would make for an interesting scene, after what had been happening
since we started.
His painting - an outtake from the renamed “Variations
Series” - ended up raising $ 3,400.00 for SERVE CANADA (www.servecanada.org),
which helps “at risk” kids who need support and opportunities
to be part of something, in a safe environment that challenges them.
The Barenaked Ladies auctioned off, in musical form no less and
the highlight of the evening, a dinner for 10 people to be made
by a world famous chef before one of the band's concerts. They raised
$ 13,500.00 for it. It was a great event- over $100.000.00 was raised.
I’ve always wanted to align my films with a good Cause, and
I hope that this may be the right fit for the work I have done to
date. Will see?
Next: Cautious Man.
Thanks to Mark Czarnecki who has offered to check all grammatical
errors on the site so far. Any help is appreciated. One day at a
time. |
